Along with changes in your diet and lifestyle, blood pressure medicines can safely help most people control their blood pressures. The medicines are easy to take with minimal side effects.

Blood pressure medicines work in different ways to lower blood pressure.

The medications may remove extra fluid and salt from the body, which will lead to lower blood pressure.  The medications may simply slow you’re your heartbeat.  The medications can also relax and widen the blood vessels.  Sometimes two or more medicines work better than one to ensure you get all the desired effects.

There are numerous types of medications and supplements.

Diuretics, which are sometimes referred to as water pills can be used to help your kidneys flush excess water and salt from your body.  In doing this that lessens the amount of fluid in your blood and your blood pressure goes down.  Diuretics are usually used with other high blood pressure medications or combined with another medication making one general pill.

Another possibility is beta blockers.  These are usually used for heart conditions or heart irregularities, but as a high blood pressure medication, they help your heart beat slower and with less fore.  Essentially, your heart will pump less blood through your blood vessels and your blood pressure goes down.

Another protection is called ACE inhibitors, which keep your body from producing a hormone called angiotensin II.  This hormone is generally occurring in your body and it can cause your blood vessels to narrow.  In taking in inhibitors, you prevent the narrowing and the blood pressure stays normal.

Along the same lines, Angiotensin II receptor blockers are a newer blood pressure medicine that protects your blood vessels from that same hormone, angiotensin II.  With this medication, blood vessels relax and widen and your blood pressure goes down.

Calcium channel blockers are used to keep calcium from entering the muscle cells of your heart and blood vessels.  Again, this allows blood vessels to relax and your blood pressure goes down.

Alpha blockers reduce nerve impulses that tighten blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more freely, causing blood pressure to go down.  Alpha-beta blockers similarly reduce nerve impulses the same way.  However, they also slow the heartbeat like beta blockers.  This again causes the blood pressure to go down.

And finally nervous system inhibitors increase nerve impulses from the brain to relax and widen blood vessels, causing blood pressure to go down. And vasodilators relax the muscles in blood vessel walls, causing the blood pressure to go down.
