If you’ve been paying attention to the hype lately, you may have noticed the hype surrounding Omega-3 fatty acids. They’re good for a lot of things: weight loss, lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol and building muscle tone.

Fat is also known as lipid and it is available or known to be in three different classes of nutrients.  The major function of fat is to provide energy for the body.  Fat contains more calories/energy than protein and carbohydrates.

Fatty acids serve as important and vital energy to the muscles, heart and other organs in the body

Fatty acids are considered to be an essential fatty acid to the body.  They are absolutely essential to your health, however, they unfortunately cannot be manufactured by the human body.  When you think about it, it’s kind of unfair.  They must be obtained from food.

Fatty acids can be gotten from fish, particularly mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon.  You only need to eat these types of fish twice a week to benefit from it.

Women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant should avoid eating several different types of fish, including swordfish, shark and king mackerel.  Such individuals should also limit consumption of other types of fish, including albacore tuna, salmon and herring.  Instead, these individuals can get Omega-3 fatty acids from taking dietary supplements.  Young children should also follow these same dietary guidelines.

By maintaining the proper balance of Omega-3 fatty acids and Omega-6 fatty acids, you will be promoting fantastic overall health.  An inappropriate balance of such nutrients will promote unwanted disease.

Those interested in lowering their cholesterol levels can benefit from eating a Mediterranean-style diet.  These individuals tend to have higher levels of good cholesterol.  You can get the same benefits from consuming fish oil supplements.

Individuals who eat a diet full of Omega-3 fatty acids tend to have lower blood pressure too.  Eating just three or more grams of fish oil daily can help reduce blood pressure significantly.  It also helps prevent heart disease.

Additionally, Omega-3 fatty acids can also help with diabetes and weight loss.  And let’s face it, who can’t benefit from being at a healthy weight?  Not everyone needs to lose weight, but if you need to lose a few pounds (even just five pounds), you should see a significant difference in your overall health with shedding just a few pounds.

Arthritis and osteoporosis may also be benefited greatly from Omega-3 fatty acid intake.  One study shows that people who are deficient in Omega-3 fatty acids may also suffer from depression.
